Sui (SUI)
Sui is a layer-1 blockchain and smart contract platform built around an object-centric data model and the Move programming language, designed to enable parallel transaction execution, sub-second finality, and horizontal scalability. Originally developed by Mysten Labs, a company founded in 2021 by five former Meta engineers who had worked on the company's abandoned Diem (formerly Libra) blockchain project, Sui launched on mainnet on May 3, 2023.12 Its native token, SUI, is used to pay transaction fees, secure the network through proof-of-stake, and serve as a liquid asset across Sui-based applications.1 As of July 2026, SUI traded at approximately $0.75 to $0.81, with a market capitalization of roughly $2.7 to 3.3 billion, ranking around the 28th- to 31st-largest cryptocurrency by that measure, more than 84% below its all-time high of $5.35 reached in January 2025.34

Most blockchains, including Ethereum, track state using an account-based model, in which a transaction typically must be processed against a single, shared account balance in sequence. Sui instead represents assets, including coins, NFTs, and smart-contract data, as discrete objects with their own on-chain identity and ownership metadata, an approach that allows transactions affecting entirely independent objects to be processed in parallel rather than one at a time.15 Sui is written primarily using Move, a programming language originally developed for Meta's Diem project by Mysten Labs co-founder and CTO Sam Blackshear, and designed specifically to enforce strict rules around asset ownership and prevent common classes of smart-contract bugs, such as accidentally duplicating or destroying a digital asset.12 Sui also introduced consumer-facing features intended to lower the barrier to entry for mainstream users, including zkLogin, which allows wallet creation and transaction signing using familiar Web2 credentials such as a Google or Apple account, and sponsored transactions, which let applications cover a user's gas fees directly.16 The network markets itself as particularly well suited to use cases such as gaming, high-frequency trading, tokenized real-world assets, and payments, where consistent low latency and predictable fees matter more than the simple store-of-value function that has traditionally dominated cryptocurrency use.3

History
Founding and early funding (2021–2022)
Mysten Labs was founded in 2021 by five alumni of Meta's Novi Research division, which had developed the Diem blockchain and the Move programming language before Meta shut the project down amid sustained regulatory opposition: Evan Cheng (CEO), Adeniyi Abiodun (Chief Product Officer), Sam Blackshear (Chief Technology Officer and Move's original creator), George Danezis (Chief Scientist and a University College London security and privacy researcher), and Kostas Chalkias (Chief Cryptographer).17 The company raised a $36 million Series A round in December 2021 led by Andreessen Horowitz's crypto arm, at a token price of $0.045, followed by a $300 million Series B round in September 2022 led by FTX Ventures, the venture-investment arm of the cryptocurrency exchange FTX, at a valuation exceeding $2 billion, with additional participation from Jump Crypto, Apollo, Binance Labs, Franklin Templeton, Coinbase Ventures, Circle Ventures, and several other investors.78
FTX's collapse and Mysten's stake buyback (2022–2023)
FTX collapsed into bankruptcy in November 2022, just two months after leading Mysten's Series B round, raising questions about the disposition of FTX's equity stake and token warrants in Mysten Labs as part of the ensuing bankruptcy proceedings.8 In April 2023, before Sui's mainnet had even launched, Mysten Labs announced it had completed a repurchase of FTX's entire equity stake and all associated warrant rights to purchase SUI tokens for approximately $96 million, in a transaction approved by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware as part of FTX's Chapter 11 proceedings.98 The buyback meant Sui launched its public network with no ongoing ownership stake held by the bankrupt exchange or its estate, a comparatively clean resolution relative to some other projects that had accepted FTX-linked venture funding around the same period.9
Token sale and mainnet launch (2023)
Ahead of its public launch, Sui conducted an initial token sale via the Binance Launchpool platform that ran from late April into early May 2023, offering SUI at $0.10 per token and raising a total of approximately $49.37 million.1011 Sui's mainnet went live on May 3, 2023, with the network's native token becoming available for trading on major exchanges including Binance, OKX, Bybit, and KuCoin shortly thereafter.12 At launch, Mysten Labs said the network had achieved a testnet throughput of more than 300,000 transactions per second across 100 validators, positioning Sui within a competitive field of newer, high-throughput layer-one blockchains that also included Aptos (itself founded by other former Diem-project engineers), Solana, and Sui.12 SUI's price fell to an all-time low of approximately $0.36 in October 2023 amid broader difficult conditions across newer layer-one tokens.3
Growth and the January 2025 price peak
Throughout 2024, the Sui ecosystem expanded across decentralized finance, gaming, and NFT applications, supported by ongoing development from Mysten Labs along with grants and infrastructure work coordinated by the Sui Foundation, a Cayman Islands-based nonprofit established to guide the network's broader ecosystem development independently of Mysten Labs' commercial interests.19 SUI's price rose substantially through the second half of 2024 and into early 2025 during a wider rally across alternative layer-one tokens, reaching an all-time high of $5.35 on January 6, 2025.34
The Cetus Protocol hack (2025)
On May 22, 2025, Cetus Protocol, at the time the largest decentralized exchange operating on Sui, suffered a major security breach when an attacker exploited an integer-overflow flaw in the platform's concentrated-liquidity math library, which was a vulnerability in the application code rather than in Sui's core protocol or the Move language itself, to drain liquidity pools using spoofed tokens and flash swaps, resulting in estimated losses between $223 million and $260 million.1314 Sui's validators responded within hours by using an emergency consensus-level mechanism to blacklist the attacker's wallet addresses, successfully freezing approximately $162 million of the stolen funds on-chain, although roughly $60 million had already been laundered through cross-chain transfers to Ethereum before the freeze took effect.1516
The validators' intervention proved highly controversial. Because freezing funds required coordinated action by the network validator set rather than an ordinary, permissionless transaction, the episode prompted a wide-ranging debate within the cryptocurrency community over whether Sui's validator structure concentrated effective control in too few participants, with some critics drawing direct comparisons to Ethereum's contentious 2016 response to the DAO hack and others describing Sui's governance as resembling a more centralized enterprise blockchain.1417 The Sui Foundation maintained that it remained formally neutral regarding the disposition of the frozen funds, releasing code for an on-chain community vote open to both validators and SUI stakers on whether to return the assets to Cetus, while separately providing Cetus with a secured loan to allow the protocol to compensate affected users in full ahead of the vote outcome.1516 The Sui Foundation also announced a $10 million, multi-year commitment to ecosystem-wide security initiatives, including audits, bug bounties, and formal verification tooling, and separately posted a $5 million reward for information leading to the attacker's identification, alongside a $6 million white-hat bounty offered directly by Cetus.1317 Cetus resumed operations after a 17-day outage, having recovered approximately $162 million of the stolen funds and restored affected liquidity pools to between 85% and 99% of their pre-hack value, while continuing to pursue legal action against the attacker.1819
Institutional products and continued ecosystem expansion (2025–2026)
Despite the Cetus incident, institutional interest in Sui accelerated markedly through late 2025 and into 2026. Grayscale's Sui Trust, first offered as a private placement to accredited investors in August 2024, received public quotation in November 2025.20 In December 2025, asset manager 21Shares listed the first SUI-linked exchange-traded fund in the United States, a 2x leveraged product with the ticker TXXS on Nasdaq.21 By February 2026, three separate spot SUI staking ETFs, including Grayscale's Sui Staking ETF (GSUI), Canary Capital's Canary Staked SUI ETF (SUIS), and another product from 21Shares, began trading on U.S. exchanges such as NYSE Arca and Nasdaq, allowing investors to earn staking rewards directly through the fund structure instead of holding unstaked SUI.212223 VanEck separately operated an exchange-traded Sui product in Europe, and CME Group introduced SUI futures contracts during this period, extending regulated derivatives exposure to the token.24 Mysten Labs also launched Hashi, a native Bitcoin-collateralization system enabling BTC to be used directly as on-chain collateral on Sui without wrapping or reliance on a centralized custodian, secured through multi-party computation and Move's object-ownership model, with over twenty institutions reportedly committing to use the system on its first day.24 A USDsui stablecoin, issued through payments company Stripe's Bridge subsidiary, also launched during this period, and cumulative stablecoin transfer volume on Sui reportedly surpassed $1 trillion by March 2026.24 Reflecting the scale of token unlocks accompanying this growth, more than $1.4 billion worth of SUI entered circulation during the week of January 26 to February 2, 2026 alone, marking the largest dollar-value token unlock of any cryptocurrency that week and underscoring the ongoing dilution pressure facing the token despite expanding institutional products.25
Technical design
Object-centric data model and Move
Sui's defining architectural choice is modeling on-chain state as a collection of discrete objects, each featuring a unique identifier, an owner, and a version number, rather than as balances associated with user accounts.15 Because most transactions involve only a small number of independent objects instead of a single shared global state, Sui's validators can process many non-conflicting transactions simultaneously, a design intended to let network throughput scale with additional hardware and validator resources rather than being constrained by strictly sequential processing.1 Simple transactions involving solely objects owned by a single party can bypass full-network consensus entirely under this model, being confirmed through validator quorum signatures alone, whereas transactions touching shared objects with more complex, multi-party ownership are ordered through Sui's consensus protocol.15 Move, the smart-contract language used for Sui applications, enforces strict linear-type rules governing how digital assets are created, transferred, and destroyed, structurally preventing classes of bugs, such as accidentally cloning a token, that have caused costly exploits on other smart-contract platforms.12
Consensus and validator set
Sui uses a delegated proof-of-stake consensus mechanism where SUI holders can stake their tokens with validators to help secure the network and earn staking rewards, with the validator set responsible for ordering transactions involving shared objects and, as seen during the 2025 Cetus incident, capable of taking coordinated emergency action, such as freezing specific addresses, when a supermajority of validators agrees to do so.117
zkLogin and sponsored transactions
zkLogin allows users to generate a Sui wallet and authorize transactions using existing Web2 identity credentials, such as a Google or Apple account, through a zero-knowledge-proof mechanism that avoids exposing the underlying credential on-chain, while sponsored transactions allow application developers to pay gas fees on behalf of their users, together intended to remove two of the more significant onboarding obstacles (seed-phrase management and upfront gas payments) that have historically discouraged mainstream users from adopting blockchain-based applications.16
Tokenomics
SUI has a fixed total supply of 10 billion tokens, of which approximately 4.05 billion were unlocked and in circulation as of mid-2026, with a further roughly 730 million scheduled to unlock in the near term and the remainder continuing to vest over a multi-year schedule tied to categories including community access programs, early investors, Mysten Labs' team allocation, and the Sui Foundation's own reserves.425 Because a large share of total supply remains locked relative to the amount already circulating, analysts have flagged Sui's fully diluted valuation, which stood at roughly $7.4–7.5 billion as of mid-2026 and is notably higher than its circulating market capitalization, as a factor that could continue to weigh on price performance as additional tokens unlock over time.426
Market history
SUI's price history reflects the broader volatility common among newer layer-one blockchain tokens: after its May 2023 mainnet debut, the token fell to an all-time low of approximately $0.36 in October 2023, before rising sharply through 2024 and peaking at an all-time high of $5.35 on January 6, 2025, amid a broader rally in alternative layer-one tokens.34 SUI's price subsequently declined substantially, falling more than 84% from that peak to trade in the $0.75–$0.91 range through much of the first half of 2026, even as the Sui ecosystem's total value locked and institutional product offerings continued to expand.326 Some analysts have described this divergence (improving fundamentals and institutional validation alongside a depressed token price) as reflecting the continued weight of Sui's large scheduled token unlocks and its high fully diluted valuation relative to circulating supply, a pattern also observed among several other prominent layer-one tokens issued around the same period.264
Positive developments and institutional standing
Sui's founding team's direct technical lineage, designing and building Meta's Diem blockchain and the Move programming language before founding Mysten Labs, has given the project a degree of engineering credibility relatively uncommon among newer layer-one platforms.17 The clean resolution of FTX Ventures' investment stake, repurchased in full through a court-approved bankruptcy transaction before Sui's mainnet even launched, allowed the project to begin public operations without any lingering ownership ties to the collapsed exchange, in contrast to some other ventures that had accepted FTX-linked funding around the same period.98 Sui's institutional product ecosystem expanded rapidly through 2025 and 2026, culminating in multiple U.S.-listed spot and leveraged exchange-traded funds (several offering staking yield directly within the fund structure), CME-listed futures, a European exchange-traded product, and the Hashi native Bitcoin-collateralization system, which drew commitments from more than twenty institutions on its first day of availability.212224 The Sui Foundation's response to the May 2025 Cetus hack (committing a loan to ensure user compensation, pledging $10 million toward long-term ecosystem security infrastructure, and supporting a community vote on frozen-fund disposition rather than acting unilaterally) was cited by some commentators as a relatively transparent and user-protective response to an incident that originated in a third-party application's code rather than Sui's own core protocol.1315
Criticism and risks
The Cetus Protocol hack and Sui's validator response together represent the most significant governance controversy in the network's history. Critics argued that the ability of Sui's validator set to coordinate an emergency freeze of specific addresses demonstrated a level of practical centralization in tension with the permissionless, censorship-resistant ideals often associated with public blockchains, and the ensuing debate, including direct comparisons to Ethereum's 2016 DAO intervention, highlighted an unresolved tension between rapid user protection and decentralized, rules-based network governance that the broader cryptocurrency industry has yet to fully settle.1417 Separately, Sui's large volume of scheduled future token unlocks, and the resulting gap between its circulating market capitalization and its substantially higher fully diluted valuation, has been repeatedly flagged by analysts as a structural headwind for the token's price, with continued dilution pressure cited as a key risk factor even as the network's institutional adoption and underlying technical metrics have improved.2625 SUI's price has also significantly underperformed its January 2025 peak, a decline that has occurred alongside intensifying competition from other high-throughput layer-one blockchains, including Solana, Aptos, and Sei, all of which compete for similar developer and institutional attention.14
