AltLayer (ALT)
AltLayer is a decentralized Rollup-as-a-Service (RaaS) protocol that offers scalable Layer 2 solutions for blockchain applications. It introduces the concept of restaked rollups, which combines the ease of creating rollups with existing stacks and the efficiency of EigenLayer's restaking mechanism. Dr. Yaoqi Jia is the founder of AltLayer.
Overview
Introduced in November 2022, AltLayer serves as a temporary extension layer on Optimistic Rollups, connecting Layer 1 and Layer 2 networks such as Ethereum, Solana, Arbitrum, and Optimism. It supports multiple chains and virtual machines, utilizes elastic rollup technology, enables code-free deployment, and coordinates in a decentralized manner to alleviate on-chain congestion and high transaction fees. Developers can use AltLayer's launchpad or control panel to quickly deploy application-specific rollups, streamlining the creation of a Rollup service platform.

Funding
In February 2024, AltLayer secured $14.4 million in a strategic funding round led by Polychain Capital and Hack VC. Dr. Yaoqi Jia emphasized that AltLayer aims to enhance dApp scalability on Ethereum using restaked rollups. Other investors included HashKey Capital, OKX Ventures, and Primitive Ventures.
Technology
Restaked rollups
AltLayer introduces restaked rollups to improve security, decentralization, and interoperability for existing rollups from various stacks like OP Stack and Arbitrum Orbit. Restaked rollups use EigenLayer's restaking mechanism, supported by three Actively Validated Services (AVSes): VITAL, MACH, and SQUAD.
VITAL
VITAL is a verification layer with a network of operators validating new states proposed by SQUAD operators. It uses a bisection protocol to challenge invalid states and can utilize optimistic ZK proofs for state root disputes. VITAL enhances transaction security by enabling instant asset withdrawals.
MACH
MACH provides a fast finality layer for Ethereum rollups, supporting both ZK and optimistic rollups. It has three state validity modes—Pessimistic, Optimistic, and Validity Proof—to ensure correct rollup state execution and enhance network efficiency.
SQUAD
SQUAD operates as a network of nodes open to all EigenLayer AVS operators, functioning as a blockchain with WASM and EVM runtimes. Validators join the SQUAD network to register sequencing needs from rollups.
Rollups-as-a-Service (RaaS)
AltLayer offers a Rollups-as-a-Service (RaaS) launchpad for deploying customized rollups across various chains and VM environments. It includes ephemeral rollups for temporary application-specific rollups that can settle on Layer 1 when no longer needed.

AltLayer is compatible with multiple rollup stacks, data availability layers, settlement layers, and interoperability bridges, collaborating with partners like Optimism and Polygon. This modular approach allows developers to tailor solutions to specific needs.
No-code dashboard
AltLayer's no-code dashboard enables users to create a tailored execution layer in minutes, offering customization options for network parameters, chain settings, and middleware solutions, simplifying the setup process.
FlashGPT
Introduced in April 2023, FlashGPT uses OpenAI's GPT-language model to simplify writing and deploying Solidity smart contracts. It supports deployment across multiple networks, including Arbitrum and Ethereum, and integrates with AltLayer's RaaS for deployment on application-specific Layer 2 solutions.
ALT Token
ALT is AltLayer's native utility token, playing a role in economic bonding, governance, and incentivizing operators. It is used for protocol fees and network transactions.
