OriginTrail (TRAC)
OriginTrail (TRAC) is a web3 infrastructure project that integrates a knowledge graph with blockchain technologies to foster an inclusive ecosystem. It operates as a cryptocurrency token on the Ethereum platform. OriginTrail was founded in September 2013 by Tomaž Levak, Žiga Drev, and Branimir Rakić as a traceability platform for food products, addressing challenges in trust and interoperability within food supply chains. The platform launched through an initial coin offering (ICO) in 2017, raising $22.5 million. OriginTrail has also received public funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 program for innovation experiments in food safety, smart agriculture, and circular economy.

At the heart of the OriginTrail project is Trace Labs, which focuses on cross-organizational data exchange in global supply chains. Trace Labs is responsible for the project’s open-source protocol and trusted network applications, collaborating with notable partners like GS1, Oracle, and Parity, the core Polkadot development team.
Technology
OriginTrail (TRAC) offers a protocol for managing supply chains with blockchain technology, enhancing trust and transparency in global supply chain management. The platform allows participants to add data related to products and components at various supply chain stages, creating an immutable record of real-world data on the blockchain. It facilitates data transfer among participants through a decentralized network of nodes and has received certifications from global regulators and compliance bodies, including GS1.
OriginTrail employs oracles and artificial intelligence to monitor its decentralized graph network, enabling partnerships with international bodies, governments, and businesses. This collaboration allows for efficient data sharing and creation across the network.
Decentralized knowledge graph (DKG)
The OriginTrail Decentralized Knowledge Graph (DKG) is a global, open data structure consisting of interlinked knowledge assets hosted on the OriginTrail Decentralized Network (ODN). It combines blockchain with knowledge graph technology and connects to multiple blockchains, such as Ethereum, Polkadot, Polygon, and Gnosis. The TRAC token manages relations between DKG network participants, and running an OriginTrail node grants the opportunity to earn TRAC token rewards.
OriginTrail multi-chain consensus layer
The OriginTrail consensus layer comprises blockchains that support trusted computation for the DKG in a decentralized environment. Currently deployed on Ethereum, Gnosis chain, and Polygon, OriginTrail's multi-chain system integrates blockchain assets and extends them with asset graphs and smart contract-based applications like data marketplaces.
OriginTrail Parachain
The OriginTrail Parachain is a next-generation L1 blockchain designed to integrate with the OriginTrail DKG. Optimized for performance and usability, it utilizes Polkadot's trust model and interoperability, enabling smooth integration with other ecosystem projects. The OTP token incentivizes network participants’ contributions to the OriginTrail DKG.
OriginTrail tokens
OriginTrail Trace (TRAC) token
The TRAC token is an Ethereum ERC-20 utility token powering the OriginTrail Decentralized Network. It is pre-mined and non-inflationary, with a maximum supply of 500 million tokens. TRAC tokens were pre-mined during the initial coin offering in January 2018. TRAC can be used for data exchange services on the OriginTrail network, rewarding node runners who provide storage and computation resources. Additionally, TRAC holders can participate in governance decisions through snapshot voting.
OriginTrail Parachain (OTP) token
The OriginTrail Parachain introduces the OTP token, a utility asset used for blockchain gas fees, inclusive governance, and DKG usage growth incentives. The maximum supply is capped at 1,000,000,000 tokens, with half initially allocated and the rest minted through inflation over time.
Trace Alliance and OriginTrail partnerships
The Trace Alliance is a collaborative hub involving the OriginTrail team, partnerships, and Trace Labs members. It unites enterprises, service providers, development communities, and research institutions to develop enterprise-scale blockchain-based solutions for supply chains. Members gain early access to developer tools and technologies, with partnerships spanning healthcare, food and agriculture, fashion, and manufacturing sectors.
OriginTrail x Oracle
In December 2018, OriginTrail partnered with Oracle for an integration between Oracle Blockchain Cloud Service and the OriginTrail network, facilitating data sharing across supply chains. This partnership brings Oracle’s enterprise-grade technology closer to supply chain applications, enhancing data value exchange in a multi-organizational environment.
OriginTrail x Blockchain Wire
In September 2023, Blockchain Wire partnered with Trace Labs to create a decentralized information hub for press releases, corporate news, and filings. This strategic collaboration offers AI-enhanced interactions with company data and insights, establishing a global platform for accessing company data and investor insights.
