Aptos (APT)
Aptos (native token: APT) is a public, layer-1 blockchain that uses a Byzantine fault-tolerant proof-of-stake design, a parallel transaction-execution engine called Block-STM, and the Move smart-contract programming language. All of these trace their lineage to Diem, the blockchain project abandoned by Meta (formerly Facebook) in early 2022.12 Aptos Labs, the company that develops the network's core software, was founded in 2021 by Mo Shaikh and Avery Ching, two engineers who had previously worked on Diem. The network launched its mainnet, nicknamed "Aptos Autumn," in October 2022.23 The project's central technical pitch is that parallel execution and Move's resource-oriented type system together allow high throughput and safer smart contracts than earlier layer-one platforms, while retaining sub-second transaction finality.14
As of September 2026, APT traded at approximately $0.59, with a market capitalization of roughly $510 million and a fully diluted valuation near $1.25 billion, placing the token well outside the top tier of cryptocurrencies by market value and more than 95% below its January 2023 all-time high of $19.92.56

Overview
Aptos was built by taking three components that Meta had funded during its Diem effort, namely the Move programming language, a parallel execution engine, and Byzantine fault-tolerant consensus research, and assembling them into a general-purpose, permissionless layer-one blockchain rather than the permissioned, stablecoin-focused payment network Diem had been intended to become.23 Its most distinctive technical feature is Block-STM, a parallel execution engine that processes non-conflicting transactions simultaneously across multiple processor cores while still producing results identical to sequential processing, allowing the network to raise throughput without requiring developers to manually partition their applications.14 The network pairs this with the Move language, originally designed at Meta, whose resource-oriented model treats digital assets as types that cannot be accidentally copied or discarded, a design its proponents argue reduces the class of smart-contract bugs that has led to large losses on other chains.47
This combination positions Aptos alongside a cohort of high-performance layer-one platforms, most prominently Solana and fellow Move-based competitor Sui (itself founded by other former Diem engineers), that compete on raw transaction speed and low fees rather than on the network-of-chains or rollup-centric models favored by Ethereum and some of its rivals.38

History
Origins in Meta's Diem project (2019–2022)
Aptos's technical foundations were laid inside Meta. In 2019, the company then known as Facebook announced Libra, an ambitious plan for a global stablecoin and payment network governed by a consortium of corporate partners.79 The project drew immediate and sustained regulatory opposition in the United States and Europe over concerns about monetary sovereignty, consumer protection, and Facebook's market power, and it was progressively scaled back and rebranded as Diem in an attempt to address those objections.79 During this period, Facebook's engineers developed the Move programming language and a parallel execution engine intended to give the network both safety and high throughput, and they built the Novi digital-wallet project alongside the blockchain itself.23 Diem never launched a public network; in early 2022, facing continued regulatory resistance, Meta sold the project's assets and effectively wound it down.27
Founding of Aptos Labs and fundraising (2021–2022)
Mo Shaikh and Avery Ching, who had worked together on Diem and Novi at Meta, founded Aptos Labs in 2021 to continue developing the technology as an independent, permissionless blockchain.23 Shaikh, who had a background in strategy and venture investing, became chief executive, while Ching, a longtime engineer who had led technical work on Diem, became chief technology officer.310 The company attracted substantial venture capital during the tail end of the 2021–2022 crypto bull market, raising a $200 million round led by Andreessen Horowitz in March 2022 and a further $150 million round led by FTX Ventures and Jump Crypto in July 2022, for a reported valuation of around $4 billion.1112 The involvement of FTX Ventures, the venture arm of the exchange that collapsed in November 2022, later drew scrutiny, though FTX's stake did not confer control over the protocol.12
Mainnet launch and tokenomics controversy (2022)
Aptos completed its genesis on October 12, 2022, and launched its "Aptos Autumn" mainnet on October 17, 2022, billing itself as the first live blockchain built on Move technology.113 The launch faced widespread criticism. Aptos initially published its mainnet without detailed tokenomics, releasing allocation figures only after the network went live, and when those figures appeared they showed that a large share of the token supply, roughly 49% between core contributors and private investors, was allocated to insiders, prompting accusations that the project was excessively venture-capital-friendly.1314 A hurried airdrop of 20 million APT (about 2% of supply) to early testnet and community participants was also criticized as poorly communicated and vulnerable to Sybil manipulation, in which individuals created many wallets to claim a disproportionate share.1415 APT's price fell sharply in its first hours of exchange trading, and the launch became a frequently cited example of a heavily funded, insider-weighted token debut.1415 Shaikh publicly defended the token distribution as fair, arguing that the majority of supply was ultimately directed toward the community and ecosystem over time.16
Ecosystem building and leadership change (2023–2024)
Following the difficult launch, Aptos focused on building out its ecosystem and institutional partnerships, and APT briefly reached its all-time high of $19.92 in late January 2023 during a broad market rally before declining through the subsequent cycles.56 The network pursued collaborations with established technology and payments firms and positioned itself for enterprise and real-world-asset use cases.817 In December 2024, Aptos Labs announced that co-founder and CEO Mo Shaikh would step down and that co-founder and CTO Avery Ching would take over as chief executive, a transition the company framed as moving the network into a new phase focused on product and adoption.103 Ching, the more technically focused of the two founders, had led much of the engineering work on both Diem and Aptos.10
Product expansion and ecosystem funding (2025–2026)
Through 2025 and into 2026, Aptos introduced several higher-profile protocols and reported growth across a number of network metrics. Aptos Labs incubated Decibel, a fully on-chain perpetual-futures trading engine that the project reported had surpassed $1 billion in cumulative trading volume, and, together with Jump Crypto, developed Shelby, a decentralized "hot storage" protocol aimed at real-time applications and AI-related workloads, slated for a 2026 launch.1718 The Aptos Foundation and Aptos Labs committed more than $50 million to ecosystem development, including infrastructure, research, and a strategic fund oriented toward trading and AI-agent use cases.1920 Aptos also expanded into stablecoins and tokenized real-world assets, including a partnership to issue the World Liberty Financial USD1 stablecoin, and reported figures such as a stablecoin market capitalization on the network in the low billions of dollars and hundreds of millions of dollars in tokenized real-world assets, a segment in which several third-party analyses ranked Aptos among the larger networks.1821 The project also reported operational milestones including several billion lifetime transactions and, in late 2025, sub-50-millisecond block times that it described as making Aptos the fastest layer-one blockchain by that measure.1821
Technical design
Consensus mechanism
Aptos uses AptosBFT, a Byzantine fault-tolerant proof-of-stake consensus protocol descended from the HotStuff-family consensus research conducted for Diem, in which the network continues to operate correctly as long as fewer than one-third of validators, weighted by stake, behave dishonestly.14 Validators are selected and rewarded based on staked APT, and the protocol is designed to deliver sub-second transaction finality.122 The network reports having operated without downtime since its 2023 stabilization, a claim its supporters cite in contrast to the periodic outages experienced by some competing high-throughput chains.18
Block-STM parallel execution
Block-STM is Aptos's parallel transaction-execution engine and one of its principal technical differentiators. Rather than requiring developers to declare in advance which transactions might conflict, Block-STM optimistically executes transactions in parallel across available processor cores, detects read-write conflicts after the fact, and re-executes any conflicting transactions as needed, ultimately producing a result identical to what strictly sequential execution would have produced.14 Aptos Labs has cited theoretical peak throughput figures on the order of tens of thousands to more than one hundred thousand transactions per second under laboratory conditions, though sustained real-world throughput is substantially lower and, as on most blockchains, governed by actual demand rather than theoretical capacity.14
The Move language
Move is a smart-contract programming language originally designed by Meta's Diem team and now used by both Aptos and its competitor Sui, each with its own dialect.37 Move treats digital assets as "resources", typed values that the language guarantees cannot be duplicated or accidentally destroyed, an approach intended to make common categories of smart-contract errors, such as those enabling tokens to be minted or lost unexpectedly, structurally harder to write.47 Aptos also maintains the Move Prover, a formal-verification tool that allows developers to mathematically check that contract code satisfies specified properties, part of the platform's broader emphasis on safety.4
Tokenomics
APT launched with an initial total supply of 1 billion tokens at its October 2022 mainnet genesis, distributed across four categories: community (roughly 51%), core contributors (roughly 19%), the Aptos Foundation (roughly 16.5%), and investors (roughly 13.5%).1323 The network does not enforce a fixed maximum supply in the manner of Bitcoin; instead, new APT is issued as staking rewards, with the supply growing over time subject to a maximum inflation rate that declines on a schedule.2223 Tokens allocated to investors and core contributors were subject to multi-year lockups and vesting following the mainnet launch, with unlocks continuing on an extended schedule, a structure that has been a recurring focus of criticism given the large insider allocation.1323 Staking rewards are paid to validators and token holders who delegate their stake, and APT is used to pay network transaction fees, which on Aptos are typically a small fraction of a cent.1822
Ecosystem and organization
Aptos core software is developed by Aptos Labs, the venture-backed company founded by Shaikh and Ching, while the nonprofit Aptos Foundation oversees grants, ecosystem funding, and broader stewardship of the protocol.319 The broader Aptos ecosystem includes decentralized finance applications, stablecoin issuers, tokenized real-world asset platforms, gaming and NFT projects, and, increasingly, infrastructure and applications oriented toward AI agents, a theme common across several layer-one blockchains in the 2025–2026 period.1719 Aptos Labs has also pursued partnerships with mainstream technology and financial services firms, positioning the network for enterprise and institutional adoption in addition to consumer-facing crypto applications.817
Market history
APT began trading in October 2022 and, after an immediate post-launch decline, rose to its all-time high of $19.92 on January 26, 2023, amid a broad early-year rally in cryptocurrency prices.56 The token subsequently declined over multiple market cycles, and by September 2026 traded around $0.59, with a market capitalization near $510 million, which is more than 95% below its 2023 peak.56 The gap between APT fully diluted valuation and its circulating-supply market capitalization reflects the continued vesting and unlocking of tokens allocated to investors, contributors, and the foundation, a dynamic that analysts have repeatedly identified as a source of ongoing sell-side pressure on the token.623
Criticism and risks
Aptos has faced sustained criticism on several fronts. Its heavily insider-weighted token distribution and the chaotic, information-sparse nature of its October 2022 launch generated early and lasting skepticism, with commentators characterizing the network as a well-funded, venture-capital-driven project whose tokenomics favored early investors and contributors over its broader community.1314 The involvement of FTX Ventures as a major backer shortly before that exchange November 2022 collapse added reputational complications, even though it did not affect protocol operations.12 More structurally, APT prolonged price decline and the persistent gap between its circulating and fully diluted valuations have kept the effect of continued token unlocks in focus, and skeptics question whether the network reported technical achievements and headline throughput figures have translated into durable, organic demand for the token itself.623 Aptos also competes directly with several other high-performance layer-one blockchains, most notably Solana and the fellow Move-based, ex-Diem project Sui, and faces the general challenge, common across the sector, of demonstrating that high transaction capacity corresponds to sustained real-world usage rather than theoretical benchmarks.38
Positive developments and outlook
Supporters of Aptos point to the technical pedigree of its core technology (Move, Block-STM, and BFT consensus all emerging from a well-resourced, multi-year engineering effort at Meta) as giving the network a stronger foundation than many layer-one competitors built more quickly and with less prior research.24 The network reported record of continuous operation without downtime since 2023, its very low transaction fees, and its progress on block times and finality have been cited as evidence of engineering maturity, and its 2025–2026 expansion into on-chain trading infrastructure, decentralized storage, stablecoins, and tokenized real-world assets has broadened its application base beyond speculative trading.1718 The transition of the more technically focused co-founder, Avery Ching, into the chief executive role has been framed by the company as sharpening its product focus.10 Whether these developments ultimately translate into sustained token demand and a recovery from APT deeply depressed price, or whether Aptos remains one of many capable but underused layer-one platforms competing for a limited pool of activity, remained an open question among analysts as of late 2026.618
