1inch (1INCH)

1inch (stylized 1inch Network; native token: 1INCH) is a decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol that functions as a decentralized exchange (DEX) aggregator, routing cryptocurrency token swaps across a large number of separate liquidity sources on multiple blockchains in order to obtain more favorable prices, lower slippage, and reduced exposure to certain forms of value extraction than a trader would typically achieve by swapping directly on any single decentralized exchange. Rather than operating primarily as an automated market maker in the manner of Uniswap, 1inch functions as a non-custodial routing and execution layer that sits on top of the broader DeFi ecosystem, using an in-house pathfinding algorithm to scan hundreds of liquidity sources — including automated market makers, request-for-quote market makers, and other decentralized exchanges — and, where advantageous, splitting a single trade across several of these sources simultaneously to minimize the price impact of large orders.123

1inch was founded in May 2019 by Sergej Kunz and Anton Bukov, who built the project's initial prototype — a DEX aggregator — at the ETHNewYork hackathon organized by ETHGlobal.2456 The aggregator was the project's first product, initially sourcing liquidity from Bancor, Kyber, and Uniswap; the founders subsequently added their own automated market maker, Mooniswap, in 2020, before rebranding it as the 1inch Liquidity Protocol in December of that year.786 By 2026, 1inch had grown into one of the most widely used pieces of DeFi infrastructure, with cumulative lifetime swap volume reported at more than $300 billion, and with the protocol's aggregation services extended across more than a dozen blockchain networks, including a 2025 expansion beyond the Ethereum Virtual Machine ecosystem into Solana.2910

Despite this scale, 1inch's business faced a difficult period in the first quarter of 2026, during which the broader market for DEX aggregation services contracted sharply alongside a wider cryptocurrency-market downturn: 1inch's flagship Aggregation Protocol saw daily average trading volume decline by 60.3% quarter-over-quarter, and the protocol's ranking among competing DEX aggregators by market share fell from first to fourth place, even as several of 1inch's newer product initiatives — including a partnership with the tokenization platform Ondo Finance and the March 2026 introduction of infrastructure allowing artificial-intelligence agents to execute trades directly — were highlighted by industry analysts as structurally significant developments independent of this broader cyclical downturn.11

History

Founding

Sergej Kunz and Anton Bukov founded 1inch in May 2019, building an initial prototype at the ETHNewYork hackathon in New York City.256 The two had met through Kunz's YouTube channel, CryptoManiacs, and had by that point competed together in more than a dozen blockchain hackathons as a team.812 The product they built in New York was a DEX aggregator: a system that searched for trades across multiple markets to offer better rates than any individual exchange, initially drawing on liquidity from Bancor, Kyber, and Uniswap.7

The problem the aggregator addressed was the fragmentation of liquidity across the rapidly growing DeFi sector. Liquidity for any given trading pair was spread across a large and growing number of separate decentralized exchanges, meaning that traders executing a swap on any single venue often received materially worse prices than were available, in aggregate, across the ecosystem as a whole. Following the hackathon, the founders continued developing the prototype into a production protocol, supported in part by a Gitcoin grant.12

Mooniswap and the Liquidity Protocol

In 2020, 1inch launched Mooniswap, its own automated market maker, as an addition to — not a replacement for — the aggregation business.8 Mooniswap used a modified pricing mechanism based on virtual balances, intended to reduce the profitability of front-running, a practice in which sophisticated traders or bots exploit visibility into pending transactions to profit at the expense of ordinary users.78 In December 2020, Mooniswap was rebranded as the 1inch Liquidity Protocol.6

The same year saw 1inch formalize its funding and governance. The project completed a private token sale on August 11, 2020, raising US$2.8 million in a round led by Binance Labs, followed by a second private sale on December 2, 2020, which secured a further US$12 million from investors including Pantera Capital. Later in December 2020, the 1INCH token launched on public exchanges and the 1inch DAO was established.5

Router development and scaling

1inch's aggregation infrastructure has been developed through a series of successive versions of its core routing engine. Aggregation Router v1, launched in 2019, introduced the project's initial cross-venue execution capability, allowing the protocol to split and route trades across multiple decentralized exchanges rather than executing entirely on a single venue.13

In November 2022, 1inch released Router v5, which merged the router with the 1inch Limit Order Protocol v3 and introduced new interaction logic, pre- and post-interactions, and a custom smart-contract error-handling system. According to 1inch, swaps through Router v5 were approximately 5% more gas efficient than through Router v4, and roughly 10% more gas efficient than the second-best performing competitor in the DEX segment — a percentage improvement, not an order-of-magnitude one.1314

Also in December 2022, 1inch released Fusion, a major upgrade introducing "intent-based" swaps, in which users sign an off-chain order expressing their desired trade rather than directly broadcasting a transaction, with specialized market participants called resolvers then competing to fill that order under favorable terms.15 The original Fusion implementation, retrospectively designated Fusion v1, was deprecated in 2023 in favor of Fusion v2.16 Fusion+, which extends the intent-based model to cross-chain swaps, entered beta on September 18, 2024 and became fully available to all users on November 26, 2024.17

Solana integration

On April 29, 2025, 1inch extended its aggregation services beyond the Ethereum Virtual Machine ecosystem for the first time, launching swaps on Solana and thereby unlocking access to more than a million Solana-native tokens through the 1inch dApp, alongside six APIs made available through the 1inch Developer Portal.1819 Cross-chain functionality followed several months later: on August 19, 2025, 1inch launched native decentralized cross-chain swaps between Solana and its supported EVM networks, executed without bridges or external messaging protocols and accessible through the 1inch dApp, 1inch Wallet, and the Fusion+ API.20

Prior to these integrations, Solana-based DeFi users seeking aggregated trade execution had relied predominantly on Solana-native aggregators, most prominently Jupiter, making 1inch's expansion a notable step toward cross-ecosystem, EVM-and-non-EVM aggregation under a single unified interface.29

AI-agent infrastructure and 2026 developments

On March 30, 2026, 1inch released Model Context Protocol (MCP) integration for its Business API suite, an interoperability standard enabling artificial-intelligence agents to interact with live 1inch infrastructure. Through the integration, agents can access 15 APIs — including Swap, Balance, Portfolio, Token, Gas Price, and Transaction endpoints — within a single goal-oriented workflow, with developers setting policy constraints governing which chains, token pairs, slippage thresholds, and execution limits an agent may operate within.1121

Earlier, in November 2025, 1inch opened developer access to Aqua, a shared-liquidity protocol intended to address a long-standing structural inefficiency affecting liquidity providers on conventional automated market makers. Aqua reached full public launch on July 28, 2026.1122

The company's partnership with Ondo Finance, focused on routing trades involving tokenized equities, went live in September 2025 alongside Ondo Global Markets, with tokenized stock and ETF swaps on BNB Chain routed through the 1inch Swap API from December 5, 2025.112324 By March 5, 2026, cumulative tokenized stock and ETF volume routed through the integration had passed $2.5 billion, making real-world assets the fastest-growing volume category on the platform — a development industry analysts characterized as one of the more durable, structurally significant elements of 1inch's product roadmap, independent of the broader cyclical volume downturn affecting the DEX aggregator sector during that period.1123

Technology

Pathfinder and the Aggregation Protocol

1inch's core technology is its Pathfinder algorithm, which scans a large number of separate liquidity sources — reported variously across different periods as ranging from more than 100 to more than 400 individual sources, spanning automated market makers, order-book-style exchanges, and request-for-quote market makers — and calculates an optimal execution route for a given trade, splitting the order across multiple venues where doing so improves the trader's final execution price.12310 Because liquidity for any given trading pair is typically spread unevenly across many separate pools of varying depth, a trade routed entirely through a single venue often experiences meaningfully worse pricing, particularly for larger orders, than the same trade routed across several venues simultaneously; 1inch's aggregation approach has been reported to deliver price improvements relative to single-venue execution, with the advantage most pronounced for larger trades and on comparatively illiquid trading pairs.124

Fusion and Fusion+

Fusion is 1inch's intent-based trading mode, under which a user signs an off-chain order specifying the trade they wish to execute, rather than directly submitting a transaction to a blockchain's public transaction pool (commonly called the "mempool"). This approach is intended specifically to protect users from maximal extractable value (MEV) exploitation, a category of value extraction in which sophisticated actors monitor pending transactions visible in the mempool and insert their own transactions immediately before or after a victim's trade — a practice commonly known as a "sandwich attack" — to profit at that trader's expense.15

Under Fusion, signed orders are filled through a competitive Dutch-auction mechanism among specialized market participants called resolvers, with the winning resolver responsible for providing the best available execution price within a defined time window; if no resolver fills an order within that window, the trade is automatically routed through 1inch's standard aggregation infrastructure instead.2529 Because resolvers cover execution gas costs rather than users paying them directly, Fusion swaps are effectively gasless from the user's perspective.11 Fusion+ extends this intent-based model to support cross-chain swaps, allowing trades to be executed across different blockchain networks using the same underlying resolver-competition architecture.1017

Resolver participation was historically gated by 1INCH staking: resolvers needed a threshold of "Unicorn Power," the protocol's staked-token metric, to access Fusion's exclusive order flow. The 1inch DAO removed that 5% threshold in early 2026.11 Infrastructure improvements announced alongside the March 3, 2026 launch of Trade Mode reduced median Fusion order execution time from approximately 26 seconds to 14 seconds, attributed to lower-level optimizations in the resolver-competition and Dutch-auction settlement process.11

Limit Order Protocol and Aqua

Beyond simple market-rate swaps, 1inch supports a Limit Order Protocol, allowing users to place conditional orders that execute automatically once a specified price target is reached. Aggregate Limit Order Protocol volume fell 30.1% quarter-over-quarter in Q1 2026, from a daily average of $104.4 million to $72.9 million, but BNB Chain was the exception, growing 52.7% to $24.0 million daily and lifting its share of total protocol volume from 15.1% to 33% — growth driven by demand connected to real-world-asset tokenization activity on that network.11

Aqua is a shared-liquidity protocol intended to address inefficiencies that have historically constrained liquidity providers participating in conventional automated-market-maker pools. Under standard AMM architecture, a liquidity provider's deposited tokens are tied to a specific pool, pair, and protocol, and sit idle whenever they are not being routed through that designated pool. Aqua instead operates as a self-custodial registry: a provider connects a wallet, approves a token balance, and creates positions that draw on that same balance, with tokens remaining in the provider's wallet rather than a pool contract.1122

Aqua opened to developers in November 2025 and launched publicly on July 28, 2026 across 13 EVM chains, having passed eight independent audits from reviewers including OpenZeppelin, Nethermind, Hexens, and Theori. The public launch was accompanied by a liquidity incentive program delivered through Merkl, funded with 10 million 1INCH from the 1inch Foundation plus a further 500,000 USDC from the 1inch DAO.2226 Separately, on March 9, 2026, the 1inch DAO approved 1IP-93, a $400,000 Revenue Stream Incubator allocating up to $50,000 per team to external developers building revenue-generating strategies on Aqua, with recipients expected to share a portion of the revenue generated with the DAO treasury.1127

Cross-chain and multi-chain coverage

By 2026, 1inch's aggregation services spanned more than a dozen blockchain networks, variously reported as 12 to 13 or more depending on the specific date and source, including Ethereum, BNB Chain, Polygon, Arbitrum, Optimism, Avalanche, Base, Gnosis Chain, zkSync Era, and, following its 2025 integration, Solana.293 This multi-chain coverage, combined with 1inch's cross-chain Fusion+ functionality, has positioned the protocol as one of the few major DEX aggregators capable of routing trades across both the Ethereum Virtual Machine ecosystem and non-EVM networks such as Solana from a single, unified user interface.2920

Tokenomics

1INCH, the network's native governance and utility token, launched in December 2020 as an ERC-20 token with a fixed maximum supply of 1.5 billion tokens, distributed at launch through what was, at the time, considered one of the most broadly distributed airdrops in the history of decentralized finance.23105 The token serves several functions within the 1inch ecosystem: holders can vote on protocol-governance proposals through the 1inch DAO and stake their tokens, historically to earn a share of protocol fees and to accumulate the Unicorn Power that governed resolver access to Fusion's exclusive order flow.25211

The 1INCH token's staking mechanism has evolved over time. In early 2026, the 1inch DAO removed the 5% Unicorn Power threshold previously required for resolvers to access that exclusive order flow, a governance change that coincided with a 6.6% quarter-over-quarter decline in total staked 1INCH, weakening one of the token's primary previously existing holding incentives.11 Commentators following the protocol in 2026 noted that the team had acknowledged plans to review the token's broader economic design during the year, with the explicit goal of improving its resilience during periods of low trading-volume liquidity, though no concrete revised tokenomics proposal had been published as of mid-2026.11

Market history

1INCH reached an all-time high during the broader cryptocurrency bull market of 2021, though sources differ on the exact figure and date: CoinGecko records an all-time high of $8.65, and price-history data places the peak on October 27, 2021, while other trackers cite a May 8, 2021 high of $7.87 as the record.282930 Following this peak, the token entered a prolonged, multi-year decline. By January 2026 it traded at approximately $0.16, and by May 2026 at approximately $0.09, representing a decline of roughly 98% to 99% from its 2021 high.293 CoinGecko recorded an all-time low of approximately $0.065 in June 2026.29

The first quarter of 2026 proved particularly difficult for 1inch's underlying business metrics, coinciding with a broader, sector-wide contraction in DEX aggregator trading activity: total daily volume across the DEX aggregator sector fell roughly 40% quarter-over-quarter, from $4.6 billion to $2.7 billion, amid a wider cryptocurrency-market downturn. 1inch's own Aggregation Protocol experienced an even sharper decline, with daily average volume falling 60.3% from $244.9 million in Q4 2025 to $97.1 million in Q1 2026.11

1inch's market share on networks where it had deployed fell from 25.2% to 17.0% over the quarter, moving it from first to fourth place among tracked aggregators. Kyber took the lead at 23.9%, following a 500,000 KNC liquidity mining program that ran from December 17 to March 11 and inflated its volume share during the overlap period; CoW Swap fell a comparable 6.2 percentage points to 18.0%, suggesting the contraction was broad-based rather than specific to 1inch. 1INCH's circulating market capitalization contracted 35.7% over the same window, from $197.7 million on December 31 to $127.1 million on March 31.11

Not all metrics moved in the same direction. Fusion volume fell only 26.5% quarter-over-quarter, a materially smaller decline than the Aggregation Protocol's, which analysts attributed to its gasless design becoming comparatively more attractive as average trade sizes compressed and gas costs consumed a larger share of each trade's value. Daily average Fusion orders rose 31.3%, from 13,200 to 17,300, and daily average Limit Order Protocol orders rose 16.8%, from 22,800 to 26,600, even as volume fell — a pattern consistent with higher-frequency, smaller-ticket tokenized-equity trading.11

Analysts following the protocol during this period noted that several developments — the Ondo Finance-linked tokenized-stock trading volume, the launch of Aqua, and the introduction of AI-agent-accessible trading infrastructure via the Model Context Protocol — represented durable, structural business developments largely independent of the broader cyclical downturn, while also cautioning that none of these developments translated directly into improved 1INCH token price performance absent either a governance change directing a share of protocol revenue to token holders, or a broader, sustained recovery in overall DeFi trading volumes, conditions that had not yet materialized as of mid-2026.11

Competitive landscape

By 2026, 1inch operated within an increasingly crowded field of DEX aggregators, including Jupiter, the dominant aggregator within the Solana ecosystem; ParaSwap and CoW Swap, both prominent EVM-focused competitors, with CoW Swap in particular noted for pioneering a distinct "coincidence of wants" batch-auction matching mechanism that allows opposing trades within the same settlement batch to fill directly against one another at spot prices, bypassing conventional automated-market-maker pools entirely for such matched trades; 0x (marketed under the consumer-facing brand Matcha); OpenOcean; Odos, which specialized in complex, multi-input, multi-output swap routing for use cases such as portfolio rebalancing and liquidity-provider-token unwinding; and KyberSwap.2510 Commentators comparing these platforms in 2026 generally characterized 1inch as maintaining the broadest overall blockchain-network coverage and the most extensive aggregation across long-tail, lower-liquidity trading pairs, while noting that its cross-chain Fusion+ product offered comparatively strong support for trades spanning multiple blockchain networks relative to several of its more narrowly focused competitors.2510

Fees

1inch has historically not charged an explicit platform-level swap fee on trades executed through its Aggregation Protocol, with users responsible for the underlying blockchain network's gas fees and any fees charged by the specific liquidity pools through which their trade is routed, typically in the range of 0.05% to 0.30% depending on the venue.29 The picture is more nuanced than a flat "zero fees" characterization, however. Per 1inch's own documentation, when market conditions shift during a transaction such that the final execution price is better than the quoted price, the resulting swap surplus is retained at the API-provider level, operated by 1inch Business, to support service operation and maintenance; certain swaps may additionally include infrastructure fees applied automatically at that same layer.31 Third-party analyses have estimated the retained share of positive slippage at roughly 0.3% to 1%.32

This structure was long cited by industry commentators as a competitive advantage relative to Uniswap's native interface, which had introduced a direct swap fee on trades made through its own frontend. That comparison no longer holds: Uniswap eliminated its interface fee in January 2026, removing the penalty aggregators had previously avoided.33

Security

1inch's core routing infrastructure and end-user funds have not been successfully compromised, but the protocol has experienced security incidents affecting resolver contracts, and the claim sometimes made in reviews that 1inch has never suffered a breach is inaccurate.

On March 5, 2025, 1inch identified a vulnerability in resolver smart contracts using the deprecated Fusion v1 implementation. The attacker exploited a low-level calldata corruption flaw in the settlement contract to impersonate legitimate resolvers, ultimately taking approximately $5 million — identified by SlowMist as 2.4 million USDC and 1,276 wrapped Ether. 1inch stated that no end-user funds were at risk and that losses were confined to resolvers running Fusion v1 in their own contracts. Following negotiations, the attacker returned the majority of the funds in exchange for a bug bounty.343536

In May 2026, TrustedVolumes, a market maker and resolver serving 1inch Fusion, was drained of roughly $5.87 million by blockchain security firm Blockaid's initial estimate, later put at approximately $6.7 million by the firm itself. Blockaid attributed the attack to the same operator responsible for the March 2025 Fusion V1 incident, though it stemmed from a different vulnerability — one located in a TrustedVolumes-controlled custom request-for-quote swap proxy rather than in 1inch's own contracts.3738

Following the 2025 incident, 1inch expanded its bug bounty programs across smart contracts, wallet, developer portal, dApp, and infrastructure layers. Aqua's July 2026 public launch was preceded by eight independent audits.22
