Gearbox

Gearbox (GEAR)

Gearbox is a unique decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol that enables users to leverage their assets in a composable and versatile manner. It acts as a generalized leverage protocol, allowing participants to take advantage of leverage across various DeFi platforms and protocols.

The mechanics of Gearbox

Gearbox operates on two primary mechanisms: passive liquidity provision and active asset utilization. This dual approach allows for a dynamic interaction between different types of users in the DeFi ecosystem.

Passive liquidity providers

Passive liquidity providers are individuals or entities that contribute their assets to the Gearbox protocol. By doing so, they earn higher annual percentage yields (APY) compared to traditional DeFi platforms. This is achieved by lending their assets to the protocol, which are then utilized by other participants seeking leverage.

Active traders and farmers

On the other side of the Gearbox protocol are active traders, farmers, and even other protocols that require leverage. These participants can borrow assets from the pool provided by passive liquidity providers. Gearbox allows these users to engage in trading or yield farming with leverage of up to four times or more.

The vision of Gearbox

The overarching vision of Gearbox is to function as a backend composable leverage protocol that integrates seamlessly into various DeFi applications. The idea is to provide leverage capabilities that users can access without directly interacting with Gearbox's interface. This is envisioned as a simple "take leverage with Gearbox" button that can be incorporated into other DeFi protocols, enhancing their functionality.

Composability in DeFi

Composability is a key feature in the DeFi space, allowing different protocols to interact and build on top of each other. Gearbox enhances this composability by providing a leverage layer that can be integrated into existing and new DeFi projects. This enables developers to create more complex financial products and services by leveraging the underlying assets in a flexible manner.
