Casper network

Casper Network (CSPR)

Casper Network is a decentralized blockchain platform that utilizes a Proof-of-Stake consensus algorithm. This platform is specifically designed to assist enterprises in deploying blockchain-based products and services through smart contracts and a developer-friendly environment. It was founded by Medha Parlikar and Mrinal Manohar and operates using its native token, CSPR.

Overview

Casper Network was established in 2018 under the umbrella of CasperLabs, a software company dedicated to integrating businesses into the blockchain sphere. The network utilizes an account-based model, allowing users to interact through accounts. Actions such as transferring tokens or executing smart contracts are performed by sending a Deploy, which contains session code. CSPR serves as the utility token, facilitating fee payments, staking, delegating, and rewards.

The network's data is stored in a structure known as Global State, which captures the current blockchain status, including account balances and smart contracts. Users interact with this state by executing code in their Deploys. The concept of Gas is employed to quantify computational work during execution, ensuring fairness and consistency. The Casper Network Runtime allows Wasm modules to interact with the host environment, granting developers access to network services via predefined APIs.

Infrastructure

Global State

Global State functions as the storage layer of the Casper blockchain, acting as a key-value store with specific permissions. It includes accounts, contracts, and related data, with access restricted by permissions. A Merkle trie data structure is used to communicate changes efficiently, allowing verifiable data sharing. Nodes in the trie can be categorized as leaves, branches, or extension nodes, each serving unique functions to streamline data traversal.

Highway Consensus Protocol

The Highway Consensus Protocol is crucial for distributed networks, facilitating agreement on a single truth. It validates transactions, resolves conflicts, and finalizes blockchain blocks. The protocol is Byzantine Fault Tolerant and used in Casper networks to meet safety and liveness standards. Validators are selected through an on-chain auction, with those holding greater stakes having more influence. The protocol supports up to one-third faulty nodes while maintaining functionality. Finality is achieved through summits, ensuring efficient and computationally low-cost confirmation.

CSPR

CSPR, the native cryptocurrency of Casper Network, is integral to its ecosystem. It functions as a utility token, rewarding validators and enabling individuals to participate as delegators. CSPR is used to pay network fees for transactions and activities, supporting the network's operations and sustainability.

Economics

Casper Network's economics are structured into four layers: consensus, runtime, ecosystem, and macroeconomy. Each layer provides incentives for the network's proper functioning.

Consensus

The consensus layer employs the Highway variant of the CBC-Casper protocol to ensure network safety and continuity. Validators play a crucial role in maintaining security, with their significance determined by their stake and delegated tokens. Validators and delegators receive rewards for their contributions, with the validator set determined through an auction mechanism.

Runtime

The runtime layer involves deploying and executing smart contracts on the global state. Validators are responsible for constructing and validating new blocks. Users pay transaction fees, or gas charges, to compensate validators. The current system measures and meters gas usage, with a first-in, first-out deploy ordering mechanism.

Ecosystem

The ecosystem layer focuses on developing decentralized applications within Casper Network. Casper Labs collaborates with developers to ensure the viability and success of dApps. This layer supports innovation and growth within the network.

Macroeconomics

Casper Network's macroeconomics involve activities in cryptocurrency markets. CSPR is treated as a cryptographic asset, with a distinct token economics model. The token supply grows at a predetermined rate, encouraging active participation and supporting economic activity on the platform.

CasperLabs

CasperLabs is a blockchain technology company advancing the Casper blockchain platform. It provides scalable and secure infrastructure for enterprises and developers to create decentralized applications. CasperLabs offers various services and tools, including the Casper Blockchain Platform and developer resources, to facilitate blockchain technology implementation.

Casper Accelerate Grant Program

The Casper Network has launched the Accelerate Grant Program to foster innovative projects within its blockchain ecosystem. This program offers financial resources, technical support, and guidance to individuals and teams working on initiatives that enhance the network. Projects across various domains are encouraged, with recipients receiving financial and technical assistance.
