SuperRare (RARE)

SuperRare is a Non-Fungible Token (NFT) marketplace and social network dedicated to tokenized digital art. It provides artists with the platform to issue limited edition art pieces that are traceable on the blockchain, ensuring verifiable proof of history and preventing counterfeiting.

History and background

SuperRare was founded in 2017 in Newark, New Jersey, by John Crain, Charles Crain, and Jonathan Perkins. The founders began experimenting with tokenizing digital art in November 2017, aiming to create a platform where creators could own their digital creations. They also established Pixura, the company behind the crypto collectible technology that powers SuperRare.

Overview

SuperRare serves as a hub for digital art enthusiasts to connect and collect unique artworks. The platform emphasizes the social aspect of collecting, allowing collectors and artists to interact easily. Users can explore top collectors and trending artists, view the number of pieces bought or created, and check the history of art ownership on the Ethereum blockchain. Artists can upload their works for free, and each piece is linked to a unique NFT on the Ethereum network.

Revenue distribution

On SuperRare, original creators receive 85% of the commission from sales, while the platform retains 15%. For any subsequent sales, creators earn a 3% commission. The platform has generated over $2 million for artists since its inception.

Payment methods

SuperRare transactions require Ethereum (ETH), as the platform does not support credit/debit card or PayPal payments. Users need to hold Ethereum to interact on the platform.

Decentralized social community

SuperRare is a decentralized social network and NFT marketplace with a user-friendly interface. Artists and collectors generate their own pages, showcasing and trading art. The platform includes several features:

  • Activities: Displays a personalized feed of NFT artists and collectors.
  • Features: A space for collaborative projects, exhibitions, and showcases.
  • Market: Where users can discover and filter unique NFT art.
  • Community: Displays SuperRare's social media platforms and editorial content.

Partnerships

In February 2021, Christie's announced an auction for a fully digital artwork backed by an NFT, marking a first for major auction houses. Following this, SuperRare and Verisart collaborated on the 10x10 series, featuring auctions for artists like AES+F and Shepard Fairey.

SuperRare features

  • Artists earn commissions on future sales of their NFT art through a smart contract system similar to royalties.
  • The platform offers a straightforward interface with various options, including Activities, Features, Community, and Market.
